Mazdoor.Co was founded as a response to the major migrant crisis of 2020.
With distributing ration kits to the destitutes and daily wagers to sending migrants back home which involved an array of administrative work including arranging coupon passes for Shramik Special to hiring buses for the transportation of distressed migrants to their homes back in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal - we saw everything in between. From thinking about the accomodation of 50 migrant workers from Jharkhand who were evicted from their rented jhuggis by their landlords and accommodating them in a school - we did all that could be done in our capacities.
The 7 month lockdown taught us what was missing in the system apart from structural loopholes. We soon realised while working with the informal sector that put us closer that the issues are deep rooted and are quite subtle. We by now, understood that the “perfect policies” won’t work if the need for the one is understood well.
In order to understand the nominal need - we went out on the ground with our field officers to not merely “survey” but to “understand” them for a change.
Mazdoor.Co has it all - what we did in the past one year and will continue doing. From capturing emotions to examining informal livelihood patterns and intervening in between with assistance in Livelihood, Health and Education under our subsequent initiatives. We wish to create an open space with like minded people to contribute, share and ventilate their thoughts about the 80% working force which is “informal” not only on papers but in our attitudes too.
